With Jamaican, Caribbean, Pakistani, African-American and Latino communities, Flatbush is one of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods with a food scene to reflect it. A picturesque Brooklyn borough, Flatbush streets are filled with quaint, quiet streets lined with Victorian mansions, and landmarks like the Flatbush Reformed Church and the iconic King’s Theater. By far the pride and joy of the hood, the historic beauty provides an impressive venue for live music and performances. A slew of new shops, restaurants and cafes have opened along Flatbush Avenue making it quite the destination—and while it's impossible to list every worthy spot, we've curated a list of places we think you should definitely add to your list.

The Castello Plan
1213 Cortelyou Road, Brooklyn

Named after Jacques Cortelyou, the engineer credited for creating the first map of Manhattan “The Castello Plan” this bistro bar makes for a solid brunch plan. Featuring a natural wooden interior, intimate atmosphere and even a beautiful outdoor seating terrace (a coveted find on the Cortelyou street) the brunch menu features all the expected favorites, eggs benny, avo toast, a burger - you get the idea. Don’t overlook our favorite, The Cortelyou - a glorious feast including sunny-side eggs, bacon, potato latkes toast, spinach, & sunflower seed salad, plus a freshly squeezed orange juice & half-a-grapefruit. What a way to start your day exploring Flatbush.

Sip Unwine
1197 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn

Your friendly neighbourhood wine bar. Sip Unwine has a casual, homestyle feel and features tapas, small plates, cocktails and exclusive wines from around the world. The food menu is a fusion of cuisine types from different parts of the Caribbean with popular classic dishes at the forefront. But, back to the wine. The wines you’ll find here are primarily sourced from organic, biodynamic, and earth supportive vineyards that respect the earth and its natural resources. You know what that means, you can have more wines and less hangover.

Wheated
905 Church Avenue, Brooklyn

New

Pizzas and cocktails go hand in hand as well as, say you and your SO? At Wheated, they do both things well. On the pizza side, you’ll find thin, crispy perfect pizzas, featuring innovative combinations all named after boroughs of Brooklyn. Like the Flatbush - oven roast eggplant, tomato sauce, fresh & aged mozzarella, garlic and Pecorino-Romano, the menu includes a good selection of delicious starters and salads too, plus a “special” menu of calzone and pizzas. On the cocktail side of things you’ll find an impressive wine and cocktail menu, plus one of the most extensive whiskey lists you can imagine.

La Loba Cantina
709 Church Avenue, Brooklyn

A truly authentic and chic experience, La Loba Cantina is a Mexican eatery specializing in Oaxacan food, with a cool, vintage vibe and an extensive mezcal menu. The colorful and inviting restaurant is decorated in true Mexican style, with an abundance of palm trees, plus acapulco chairs, patterned floor tiles, and guitars and paintings adorning the walls. Cocktails come quick and strong with an extensive menu offering Classics, House Specialies and even a Mezcal Flight. The food menu showcases Oaxacan street food and other Mexican favorites designed to share and a mix of smaller snack size plates and bigger bites.

Parkside
705 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn

Parkside is the epitome of “industrial chic”, a rustic well designed big open bar and restaurant, serving up craft beers, Italian style bites and pizzas. The cocktail menu could basically have been designed by IDK Tonight, with all the drinks being named after dating terms like, U Still Up? Or Swipe Right and Non Date, Date. The pizzas are served up Neopolitan style and feature simple, clean Italian toppings. Watch out for the live music nights too, what a treat.

Kings Theatre
1027 Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn

The pride and joy of Flatbush, the Kings Theatre is a true New York landmark. Originally opened in 1929, the spectacular Theatre lay somewhat dormant for many years before it’s major 8 year, $75M renovation and grand reopening in 2015. Now, one of the city’s most beautiful music and live performance venues, you can catch a variety of shows like comedy, music or dance, If it’s the ornate detailing and history that piques your interest, take a historical tour, a behind the scenes detailed walk through of the venue - also available as a Happy Hour paired with a glass of wine.

Taste the Tropics Ice Cream
1839 Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn

An island-inspired ice cream shop in New York City's largest Caribbean community serving up real Caribbean flavors using authentic ingredients imported from the tropics. This no-frills parlour started dishing up the scoops way back in 1978 and is still a family-run business, that’s quite a feat for New York. Their homegrown flavors include rummy nut, mango, rum raisin and the perennially popular great nuts—a malty, nutty, butterscotch-infused treat.

Milk and Honey
1119 Newkirk Avenue, Brooklyn

Brunch, Brunch, Brunch. Milk and Honey is a large, light filled industrial space and your go-to for a serious brunch fix. Serving up some of the best coffee in New York, expect “Aussie style” flat whites made with uber freshly roasted beans, or freshly squeezed juices if that rocks your boat more than the caffeine fix. The all-day menu, served from 7 AM to 8 PM is where this cafe really shines though, with gorgeously plated specialties like Three Eggs in Hell - zucchini, burrata cheese and spinach mixed in a spicy tomato sauce served with sourdough bread, or the Corn Fritters, served with Za’atar labneh, housemade peperonata sauce, soft poached eggs and green herbs - and that’s only scratching the surface. Trust us and make the visit to explore the full and expansive menu.

The Farm on Adderly
1108 Cortelyou Road, Brooklyn

A trip to Flatbush wouldn’t be complete without a shout out to The Farm on Adderly. A neighborhood staple, and one of the early ‘farm to table’ restaurants, this cute little spot includes a cute little garden and offers up New American style food. It’s hard to go past the Farm Burger, pasture-raised beef, served on an english muffin, with handcut fries and a dill pickle but if you can convince your date to share, we recommend indulging in a few of the starters too - like the Pork Croquette with shishito yogurt sauce, farmer's cheese, red chili pickled fiddleheads and cilantro. The seasonal cocktails are expertly shaken or stirred, highlighting only the freshest, in-season ingredients.
